ALIA believes that:
ALIA Research Committee
The ALIA Board of Directors has established the ALIA Research Committee to promote the value of research, to provide advice on the development of REAP and ALIA's role in research in general, to have oversight of the research fund and to recommend recipients of research awards and research activities to be supported by the research fund. It works closely with the ALIA Research and Publishing Standing Committee. This committee is responsible for advising the ALIA Board of Directors on the key priority areas of Research and Publishing.
ALIA Research Mentoring Program 2009
The ALIA Research Mentoring Program was a new initiative for 2009. The member survey conducted in 2008 clearly showed that ALIA's members were eager to have access to more research support and guidance. In today's ever changing information rich and technologically driven world, it has become more important than ever that library professionals embrace a culture of research and scholarly enquiry. Research skill and knowledge are the essential tool kit for ensuring that libraries and librarians continue to effectively and efficiently meet the evolving needs of the clients and communities they serve. The ALIA Research Mentoring Program provides the opportunity for professional members to develop and refine their skill, knowledge and confidence in conducting research.
The Program is open to practising librarians or library technician members who have been personal financial members for at least two years at the time of application. The program is not open to members occupying research or teaching positions.
The purpose of the Program is to provide the opportunity for recipients to receive expert coaching and guidance as they undertake a research project on a selected library or information issue.
Four recipients have been selected to take part in the 2009 Program. The successful recipients were matched with a mentor who has experience in conducting research. The recipients are required to:
ALIA e-prints facility is currently being reviewed. Once this has been re-established the electronic archives will aim to increase the visibility and accessibility of research output relating to library and information services.
ALIA Research Program
The ALIA Research program is a network of peers working together to exchange ideas and information. It has been developed along recommendations of the report: Promoting research and information sharing: report of the ALIA research initiative project, commissioned by the ALIA Board of Directors in 2002.
ALIA Research program allows library and information services practitioners and researchers to share ideas, information and experiences about doing research and using results of research, encouraging and supporting and research innovation in Library and Information Science.
Professionals and researchers in a wide array of fields within - and related - to the library and information sector can benefit from the program, particularly with the establishment of the ALIA e-print archive.
ALIA Research Fund
Contributions to the ALIA Research Fund support research into a broad range of issues that can lead to enhanced professional practice across the sector, for example the impact of technological advances on client services, workplace issues and more.
The Research Fund also supports ALIA's Research Awards program through which members have the opportunity to apply to undertake projects with the potential to advance practice of the profession. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible. Email (please remove '.nospam' from address) for more information. The ALIA Research Fund will preserve a memorial donation in honour of a departed family member, friend or colleague. The ALIA Research Fund welcomes Bequests and Donations to enable it to fund Library and Information Science research.
Commitment to research and innovation will enable the Library and Information Science profession to add to the body of knowledge and encourage continuos improvement in professional practice. ALIA plays a critical role in nurturing the advancement of the profession by fostering and supporting research activities to ensure ongoing excellence in the delivery of Library and Information Science.
