Uniting a profession: The Australian Institute of Librarians 1937-1949
Jean P Whyte
ISBN 9780868045658 (pbk) Jean Whyte was an inspiring educator and a giant intellect within the library profession. For many years she researched the history of the professional association - founded in 1937 as the Australian Institute of Librarians - and amassed a huge collection of primary material. When Jean's health declined, David J Jones took up the challenge of completing the history. Uniting a profession is a fascinating analysis of the successes and failures of an Australian professional association and of the dynamic leaders of the library profession of the time. This work casts new light on libraries and librarians during twelve critical years of library progress and development in Australia. It meticulously chronicles events, provides pen portraits of the key figures, and is a corporate biography of an association which began modestly and led to an association, which seventy years later, has international stature. The recommended retail price in Australia is $42.50 (GST incl). The overseas airmail price is $AUD60.00 (GST excl).
