Premier awards
HCL Anderson Award
[peer-nominated]
Honouring outstanding achievement within the library and information services sector by an associate member.
Redmond Barry Award
[peer-nominated]
Honouring outstanding contribution to the library and information services sector by an individual who is not eligible for associate membership.
Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award
[peer-nominated]
Recognising pioneering in new areas of library and information science by an individual or institutional member.
Fellowships
Fellowship
[peer-nominated]
Recognising the attainment of an exceptionally high standard of proficiency in library and information science and a distinguished contribution to the theory or practice of library and information science.
Research awards
Study Grant Award
[self-nominated]
Study grants up to $5000 are offered to provide an opportunity for librarians to undertake projects that they would otherwise be unable to do because of the time and costs involved.
Dunn & Wilson Scholarship
[self-nominated]
A biennial award up to $5000 (presented at the biennial library technicians conference) that provides the recipient with an opportunity to investigate a particular project relating to the practice of library technicians.
Ray Choate Scholarship
[self-nominated]
A biennial award up to $4000 for research on a particular aspect of reference or information services that will lead to improved practice in the area.
YBP/Lindsay & Croft Research Award for Collection Services
[self-nominated]
A biennial award up to $4000 that aims to increase the recipient's professional knowledge and experience; to provide the recipient with the opportunity to investigate and research a particular aspect of the development of collection services; and to encourage practice-related research or projects that will inform and advance practice in collection services and management.
Twila Ann Janssen Herr Research Award for Disability Services
[self-nominated]
A biennial award up to $5 000 that aims to encourage an early career LIS practitioner to investigate and research the potential for further development of Australian services for people with a disability and/or the use of emerging technologies in the provision of disability services; and to undertake practice-related research or projects that will advance practice in services to people with a disability.
Excellence awards
Excellence Award
[self- or peer-nominated]
Recognising excellence in any area, field or aspect of practice in the library and information services sector by an individual member, groups of members or institutional member.
Metcalfe Award
[peer-nominated]
Recognising high achievement by a personal financial member in their first five years of practice in libraries and information services.
Scholarships and bursaries
Aurora Scholarship Supporting attendance at the Aurora Institute by an ALIA member who would otherwise be unable to attend.
ATSILIRN Bursary Assisting an ATSILIRN member who would otherwise not be funded by their organisation to attend dreaming08.
Student awards
ALIA Student awards Recognising students for excellence in their studies.
Merit awards
ALIA Letter of Recognition The ALIA Letter of Recognition may be presented to a person or organisation who/which has rendered a significant, special or specific service to:
  • Librarianship, libraries or information management; or
  • The promotion and development of libraries or library services; or
  • The Australian Library and Information Association; or
  • For demonstrating such service over a period of time.
ALIA Group-based awards Recognising achievement in areas of practice and interest represented by ALIA groups.
ALIA Silver Pin Recognising ALIA members who have served for five terms on ALIA committees.
Previous awards and award winners [no longer offered]
ALIA Manager of the Year recognised and encouraged exceptional management practices within the library and information sector
Innovation Awards recognised innovative practices by library staff in any aspect of library activity
Metcalfe Medallion commemorated John Metcalfe and his contribution to librarianship and library education
